Musk oxen live in the arctic tundra in the far northern parts of North America. The average winter temperature in this region is about -30 degrees F. (-34 C) The long brown outer guard hairs can be as long as 24 inches (60 cm) and can reach nearly to the ground. The wool layer underneath can be as much as 3 inches thick (7 cm). The combination of the two layers keep the musk oxen insulated. In the warmer summer months, they shed the wool under-layer to prevent overheating.
